Good team building and why they are better The most memorable and successful team-building events are ones that don’t feel like a day at the office. They should be fun and easy events that open up communication channels. Most HR managers would of course want powerful results from the team building activity. Through a series of planned team building events we can meet their expectations. There are various elements that are fun and motivational and can contribute to building team’s communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution for short term. They can also help to facilitate long term team building through fostering genuine connections, deeper discussions, and processing. Teamwork is more important than ever because of distance working in post- covid19 ‘innovate or die’ economy. It has become more important than ever that employees can collaborate effectively across geographical sites, juggling with mobile work station and work from home scenarios. Amongst other things, talent retention will become more difficult, as things like company culture becomes less and less important for worker who are at home. The workers will choose the best salary, as other factors lose their importance. The companies will shop for talent anywhere in highly competitive global job market. Teams in the future of work will be increasingly 4D: diverse, dispersed, digital, dynamic. Future of job satisfaction with still depend on high-levels of cross-team collaboration, open and free-flowing communication, a culture of mutual support and tolerance, the active encouragement of ideas. But with lack of direct face-time in office, this will have to be achieved in team’s day out! 1. Encourage collaboration, not competition We all love Dopamine kick! Hence, some employees become so focused on ‘winning’ that they fail to learn cooperation from the experience. Your staff is challenged on a daily basis, so most people are not looking forward to a good challenge on their day out. So, choose an activity that encourages your staff to work together to solve a problem. 2 Make it accessible for everyone Sure, some people love to play softball or run race and to them this is fun form of team building. But not everyone would be up for that challenge. The extroverted, energetic members sometimes don’t realize, but they may make others feeling left out, which is the opposite of what you want to accomplish. In Singapore, indoor and aircon can be a important factor when choosing a team activity. 3. Include creativity boosting activities: On your team building day, colleagues should feel comfortable offering suggestions and ideas. A respectful and trusting team building environment will also enable colleagues to think more creatively and be more collaborative in brainstorming sessions when they get back to work. 4 Schedule the activity during work hours Weekends are for families! No matter how much they love their job, nobody wants to put in extra time on evenings or weekends. If you are hosting the activity over lunch or breakfast, but be sure to provide food! Friday afternoons are ideal and preferred by most staff. 5. Go offsite, not outside Any activity in a meeting room, does not give the impression that this is not “regular” work. This also gives people a chance to show up late and leave early, or take that “important” call! This makes them lose out on important communication they could have had before and after the activity. Different environment fosters different interaction, often making it more free. 6. Personality based team activities In post Covid-19 work environment, most communication is over phone or laptops. This makes effective communication even more important. Being a good communicator also means being a good listener. But how do you listen carefully or understand properly or explain accurately when you do not know the person on other side of the video call? So, try a personality-based team bonding day where your staff can know each other’s personality and preferences. Small details that framed them and things that matter to them. Comments are closed.
