If you have yet to start working and wanted to find some information on the people who you may meet at work, you are at the right place! But if you are already working and just here for a fun read, you will also be in for a treat as it may point out some glaring personas you have also fortunately or unfortunately encountered in your workplace. I have also pointed out some suggestion you could adopt to manage such personas while you work with them. So, let’s start introducing these creatures to you, one by one. Independent OneThese people typically assume a quiet and introverted personality. You will find that they often sneak their way out of social gatherings, volunteer works, lunch or pantry gatherings with the other colleagues. This is because communicating with people isn’t their best trait and hence, often feel drained and frustrated after trying. Since they recognize that it is inevitable to communicate and work with others in an organization, they will save their energy and avoid other unnecessary mingling with colleagues outside of work. Although these people are introverted in nature, they are the ones that get their work done. They analyse hard data well and are often fairly meticulous in their work. Handling the Independent Ones: They work best and more productively alone or in smaller groups, forcing them to work in large teams could often be counter-productive to their performance and efficiency. However, it is inevitable to work in teams, so when this happens, allow them more time to process and internalize their thoughts. Acknowledge their achievements and provide constructive feedback so they can improve the next time round. Social ButterflyThis persona is a complete flip side of the Independent One and one that the Independent One will fiercely avoid because of their large difference in energy levels. You will often see the social butterfly everywhere but at their work desk. They could be in the pantry talking about the juicy gossips, or at their colleagues’ desk chatting about what to have for lunch. They are most energetic while socializing and not doing work. Even though they may look like they are not working during working hours, mysteriously much of their work is completed on time. This is mostly due to their wide connections. They are more resourceful in finding out information from their friends and colleagues to complete their work faster. They may even have friends who are willing to help them complete their work. These people usually are quick witted and knows how to smoke their way through their persuasive skills. Handling Social butterflies: Set clear objectives to meet and what end results they have to achieve, and but allowing them to have freedom to choose the methods to achieve the goals. If they are distracting the other colleagues from working, do let them know as well, to adjust their priorities between socializing and working, while also preventing any decrease in workplace productivity. Ninja TurtleThe person is one who is Missing in Action (MIA) most of the time. These people can have an amiable front, but steps on people’s nerves when we urgently need them, yet are almost always uncontactable. Their workplace status is almost always offline and they take ages to reply a simple email. Do not that sometimes, not only our colleagues, this can also be our bosses. Handling Ninja Turtles: Grab them whenever you see them and remind them of the tasks to be completed. Be thick skin and send them frequent interval online reminders (in case they miss the previous emails) especially when you see that they are not doing any work at the moment. Angry BirdLike a ticking time bomb, you handle them with care. They are individuals that often speak their minds but on the other hand, are not ready to receive the same treatment. In a good way, it helps them projects a personality of honesty and straightforwardness. However, in the bad way, it causes tension in the workplace, and decreases work productivity. Although they have a poisonous tongue, these people can actually be good at heart. They just fail to express their emotions appropriately due to their insecurities which often leads them into misunderstandings and conflicts. Handling Angry Birds: Be calm and rational while speaking to them. Try to counter their sharp words with polite and tactful ones. When they see that you mean no harm and threat, they will tone down their defensive words and the communication flow will get better. SlackerSlackers are can be labelled as a species of sloths while possessing the intellect, reaction time and physical form of humans and it is not as uncommon as you would think. They seem to have been hired due to their perfectly crafted set of resumes but did not pull their own weight when placed in a team. Instead they cleverly delegate work away, so that they do not end up with much to do. They procrastinate a lot and causes many delays in the work flow of the team. Ultimately, needing others finish up the work for them. Even in meetings, they often give excuses to leave early, come late or even the obtain the permit to be absent. Handling Slackers: When they are given a task, assign a member of the team to keep tabs on them and if necessary, sit down and work on the project together with them. The carrot and the stick working style may work to give them some drive and motivation to work on the project themselves. Boot-LickerThey are people who are diligent in making connections with the big shots in the company to pave a faster way to advance the corporate ladder. Due to being overly ambitious, they often see and split workplace relationships into ones that benefits them, and ones that don’t. Therefore, it may be difficult to form a genuine friendship with them. On a positive note, they can be great to work with and have a certain level of competency in their field of work. Handling Boot-Lickers: Ensure that they do not compromise on their work assignments and affect the workplace performance and productivity with their social behaviours. Set boundaries so that they cannot cross and not let their flattery of you or others cloud your judgements. And if necessary, point out their inappropriate behaviours in a constructive and tactful manner. To End Off,I would not limit and box our workplace to only possess this 6 types persona but these are the common ones we may encounter while working. Therefore, having some mental preparation and ways to manage them while working could help to smoothen out your working experience.
