Clients can be important financial support to businesses – be it freelancers or huge organizations. Therefore, the front liners who are meeting and liaising with the clients plays a significant role as they are the face of the company and projects the company image to others. Hence, to make sure you grab the attention and wallet of the clients, knowing your clients’ needs are significant. It is only when the clients can see that your service or product has the capability to help them that they will recognize the worth of giving you their attention and money. Do Your HomeworkYou can easily identify if the pitch you are presenting to your client is well-prepared or not, what’s more the client that you are facing. Before you jump into crafting and presenting your pitch, research on the client’s profile, the organization they are representing, what’s their organization’s vision and goals, and what service and products they provide etc. These are very important information to help you to make an intelligent inference on what kind of needs your client may be seeking. Furthermore, from the information and inference gathered, you can craft a better script, tailoring it to the needs of your clients. Listen with UnderstandingActive listening – a good method to use in trying to listen for why your client is saying what he/she is saying, and why it is important to them and the company. Ask questions to clarify when there are any unclear points that needed clarifications, do not jump into conclusions and fall into the trap of assumptions. Minimize all distractions from your surroundings as much as possible that will take away your focus on the client such as your electronic devices like your phone – watches included, as it can distract you from taking too much notice of the time instead. All these can help you to focus better and understand the client before you, to recognize their needs, helping you to plan possible ways to proceed in presenting you work in relation to their needs. Offer Feasible Suggestions and IdeasBy this time, you probably already have a clearer idea on what your client may or would need. What you can do now is to mentally and briefly formulate plan on how you can match the needs of your clients using your existing resources, and service you provide or offer other possible feasible ideas. If you do not have any ideas or suggestions that could help the clients, you can carry on and continue to show interest, give your full attention to listen and understand the clients you are facing. Follow Up with the Client(s)Give a simple, polite and sincere message or email after your meeting with the client to show your appreciation for the time he/she gave you and offer further assistance or clarifications if your client needs it. In addition, to not forget, quickly jot down your client’s profile, their possible and recognizable needs in a notebook or your phone, where you can analyse them more deeply later and research on ways you how you can assist them further. It is also good to note down how to improve your pitch better the next time round as well. If you have found other ideas to help the client, you can then send her another follow up message to request another meet up or an email to give her the information you have found that may help. In Summary To be understand the client’s needs better, pre-preparation such as researching on the client’s profile, which company the clients are representing, and key information on the organization should be made before making the appointment. During the appointment, make an effort to actively seek understanding in what you are listening, and do a follow-up with the client after the appointment to understand their needs better and improve on your previous pitch for the next session.
