Have you ever wondered how perfumes are formulated? Looking at those fanciful perfume bottles along with their beautifully crafted fragrance sold on the market shelves, your curiosity may have been sparked. To sum perfume creation up, it is not only chemistry-related, but also a form of art. Perfumers are artists who express their ideas through their fragrance formulations. Read on to find out some of the back-ended scenes to perfume formulation and how our wonderfully scented perfume came about! Finding your MuseThis first step is a canvas for perfumers to start their art. Inspirations can be found everywhere, and be anyone or thing – like a living creature, where only our imagination is our limit. Furthermore, what’s convenient for experienced perfumers is that their formulation can be created by falling back to their years of knowledge and exposure. However, if this formulation is not created for yourself, client’s requirements will be your restriction, where your ideas should meet and involve the client’s criteria and preference too. Determine Crucial NotesAfter knowing the theme of your inspiration, you will now determine the crucial notes that will form the focus and theme of your formulation. Pick one crucial scent from each Top, Middle and Base notes. Then determine the fragrance ingredients that will constitute each crucial accord and the presence of secondary notes that can support the accord. To help the perfumers visualize how the scent will turn out, perfumers can opt to do this step using perfume strips dipped in their selected crucial scents and smelling them together to try out the different fragrance formulation combinations. Drafting FormulaWhen it comes to drafting a fragrance formula, there can be more than one approach to write it. Some perfumers can choose to separately draft out each Top, Middle and Base accords, others would do write down all at once and the ingredients required in every accord. For more accuracy when upscaling the formulation, perfumers usually calculate their fragrance ingredient weight in grams instead of in ml. Furthermore, to ensure the ingredients used of appropriate and permitted dosage, IFRA regulations are required to be followed. Actual WorkYou may think after formulation, the work is considered as done. However, after the fragrance creation is formulated, it will still have to undergo skin tests to check if the fragrance formulation is in accordance to what the perfumer planned and imagined out to be. After evaluating and determining that the formula is to what the perfumer wants, this fragrance formula will be sent to trained evaluators to obtain further feedback. After some rounds of feedback, formula according to the feedback and the process of evaluation will repeat until the perfumer and evaluator judged the product to be successfully made. Too Much Work?
