In 1994, the first genderless perfume was introduced by Calvin Klein. Yet, do you know that perfumes used in the ancient past are not separated by genders?
Historically, perfumes have been formulated by age-old pharmacists who mixes up different ratios of botanical aromatic plant parts. If the formulation is pleasant smelling, they can be immediately made into fragrance pouches and used.
It is only later when technology advances, that media launched the idea of gender separation in perfumes and thus, perfume lines continued this branding approach.
Feminine V.S. Masculine Perfumes
Being exposed to such a fixed idea for decades, it has likely influenced many people on what is socially correct to wear for perfumes base on our genders.
I am sure that we can often associate how feminine perfumes are more floral scented, and possesses sweeter facets to it.
While, on the other hand, masculine colognes usually take on notes that are heavier on the spicy and woody scent.
After unisex perfumes are launched and broke the concept of gender separated perfumes, perfume lines have also followed suit and steered from the usual stereotypes, including perfumes with a balanced moderation ratio of both worlds – which we now known as unisex perfumes.
Fresh, citrusy or musky scents are the common fragrance notes you may find in unisex perfumes, as these scents does not fall heavily to feminine nor masculine.
It is now not uncommon for some females who prefer colognes and men who do favours sweeter and floral scented perfumes. These gender barriers towards perfume preference have long since been broken.
Men can definitely also don ladies’ perfumes and still be charismatic gentlemen, while a lady can use a men’s cologne and look and smell beautiful and strong as well!
Just recognize that our image is shaped by our own perception, and sticking to our preferences is usually the best choice; be it for us, or for others as well!
